Frugal is ok
I am reading a novel right now by Sally Rooney and I really enjoy it.
And it makes me happy to see that her style of writing is also kind of frugal when it comes to describing settings or things. She is very focused on dialogs and the internality of it all. And it still works. I mean maybe that’s even a big reason why I like it so much.
It made me feel better about my own writing. Deep down (or not even that much down, it’s pretty much up here) I have the belief that I need to become better and change my style. That my stories and chapters are too short. That I need to change. I write too frugally. I write the fun parts, I get to the point I want to make and leave again. Done.
And now I think: Maybe that’s ok. If I like it that way, maybe there are other people who can like it, too.
It’s a preference thing, right? Art is subjective. I start to be able to believe it a tiny bit more.
I think that's a good thing.
