Zoom in, get confused
I like to write stories about normal people. I find the most normal human struggles fascinating. Not even struggles, really. Just being human in the most normal way is wild to me.
I like to think myself into characters and try to imagine how they feel, who they are, what they want. It’s a unique thing to create a character by yourself, just with your imagination. It’s a unique feeling. It’s like drawing a picture and with time and work it becomes more and more nuanced and richer. And already this process alone is so much fun for me. This is already so interesting. I like to create this specific internal world of a character, while also somehow telling a story. It’s impossible to do and never perfect, but it’s a trying.
So, for me even the most “boring” character is interesting and not boring, if it’s made well. Every character, like every real person, has their own unique story, their own struggles, their own feelings and thoughts, shaped by so many factors. It is fascinating. How can it not be. Humans are… it's a lot.
So, that’s why I don’t need big drama, blood and war to get excited in a story (As a writer, nor as a reader). It’s the opposite, really. I want to get low, closer, slow down, zoom in, try to understand, get confused, feel it, too. Give me the normal, the realistic stuff. Give me the inside of one’s brain, their world. That is interesting and wild enough.
